Renfrow
announces retirement
State
Controller Ed Renfrow (right) said he will retire when
his current term ends June 30, ending a 27-year career that
included three terms as state auditor and three terms in the
state Senate. During Renfrow's tenure as controller, the
state's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report has won awards
for excellence in financial reporting every year since 1994
from the Government Finance Officers Association. The
controller's office won a federal award in 1996 for use of
technology to provide state officials with real-time financial
and management information on the state's financial condition.
Senate
fills seat on UNC Board of Governors
The
state Senate filled nine seats on the UNC Board of Governors
on Thursday, including Anne Cates of Chapel Hill and Hannah
Gage of Wilmington in the woman category. Four incumbent
board members were re-elected to at-large seats: Brad
Wilson, Ray Farris, Irving Aldridge and Jim Phillips Jr.
Another incumbent, Bert Collins, was re-elected in the
minority category, along with Willie Gilchrist, the
Halifax County school superintendent. John Davis of
Winston-Salem was elected to fill a vacancy. Wilson, Farris,
Phillips, Collins and Davis are members of NCCBI.

State Sen. Ellie Kinnaird (D-Orange) (left) has been
elected chair of the General Assembly's Women's Caucus for the
2001-02 session. Rep. Mary McAllister (D-Cumberland) was
elected vice chair and Rep. Mia Morris (R-Cumberland) was
chosen as secretary and historian.
Andy Griffith and Doc Watson will headline the
salute to former Gov. Jim Hunt for his 20 years of service to
the state. The event, "North Carolina Salutes Gov. Jim
Hunt: A Lifetime of Leadership," will be held March 20 at
the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Raleigh, and is free and
open to the public. In addition to Griffith and Watson, other
performers will include Shirley Caeser, a gospel singer and
11-time Grammy Award winner from Durham; the beach music group
General Johnson and the Chairmen of the Board; the Red Clay
Ramblers; and Cravin' Melon, a local band popular with college

Rodney
Foushee (left) has been named the new editor of Wildlife
in North Carolina magazine, which is published by the state Wildlife
Resources Commission.
An award-winning journalist and outdoor columnist, Foushee
worked as a newspaper reporter for the Waynesville Mountaineer
and then the Wilmington Morning Star before joining the
magazine staff in 1996 as an assistant editor. He replaces
Lawrence Earley, who retired in December after 20 years at the
publication.
