Two NCCBI membership recruitment/retention events held in Western North
Carolina this week were well-attended. David Huskins (left),
an NCCBI executive committee member, and Dr. Phyllis Crain,
a board member, organized a Monday evening reception attended
by 35 persons at Spears Barbecue in Linville Falls, which
Huskins owns. Hugh Morton, Crain and Huskins gave
resounding endorsements of NCCBI. President Phil Kirk
fielded questions from the audience related to public schools,
taxes, regulation, clean air, lottery and workforce
development. A Tuesday morning breakfast at Countryside
Barbecue in Marion was attended by 46 people. Huskins presided
and Kirk addressed the group on the history and functions of
NCCBI. County Manager Chuck Abernathy, McDowell Tech
President Virginia Mitchell and McDowell Schools
Superintendent Sherron Crawford spoke on collaborative
efforts to improve educational opportunities for area
residents. Rosemary Wyche, NCCBI vice president of
development, also attended and coordinated arrangements for
the events, along with Ann Lee, director of membership
services.
