Special
Report
Senators' point about
good government hurts them in the wallet
Not claiming all the per diem
days they were entitled to cost members of the Senate $5,000 or more in
total compensation for the 2001 legislative session. Although 92 of the 120
House members claimed the $104 per diem for every day of the 317-day
session, no senator claimed more than 278 days. Senate President Pro Tem
Marc Basnight (left) claimed 270 days. The chart below lists
senators according to their total compensation for the year. The list does
not include pay totals for the chamber's four elected leaders, who are shown
in a separate chart.
The average compensation for senators this year was $51,428 vs. $56,517 in
the House. Whether a
senator fell above or below the average is largely a factor of the number of per
diem days claimed plus travel expenses. Senators who live the greatest
distance from Raleigh typically receive the most in travel expenses. Below,
the top five senators in total compensation all live in the western part of
the state.
