The NCCBI 2002 Legislative Conference:
Why You Should Attend!
The business community and
our state’s elected officials will be faced with many challenges
during the General Assembly’s "short session" which
convenes on May 28. Legislators will wrestle with tough issues as they
deal with the state’s budget deficit. They will also consider
important issues like legislative session limits, recommendations from
the Governor’s Commission to Promote Efficiency in Government and
the Governor’s Commission to Modernize State Finances, how to deal
with the state’s growing Medicaid problem, transportation concerns
and the ongoing challenge to adequately fund all levels of education.
An important opportunity for business
leaders to hear first hand about where things stand in the General
Assembly will come at NCCBI’s annual Legislative Conference. The
event will be held on Thursday, May 30, at the North Raleigh Hilton
Hotel on Wake Forest Road. As leaders in your communities and
industries, we urge you to make plans to attend this important event.
The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with
registration and a continental breakfast before quickly moving into
presentations by the state’s leading political figures. You will
hear straight-forward talks by the Speaker of the House, the President
Pro Tem of the Senate as well as the minority leaders of both
chambers. There will be hard dollar reports from the state’s budget
director and briefings on transportation challenges, the impact of
Medicaid, session limits and an update from the state treasurer. NCCBI
leaders will update you on the Governor’s Commission on Promoting
Government Efficiencies and workforce development. A representative
from the National Conference of State Legislatures will tell us how
North Carolina’s challenges compare to other states and at lunch we
will hear from Congressmen Richard Burr and Bob Etheridge on federal
issues.
Before the briefings and candid
dialogue begin, however, you will be invited to spend a relaxing
evening with lawmakers at the Legislative Reception. There you will be
able to share your personal concerns with legislators in one-on-one
conversations in a friendly atmosphere. That much-anticipated event
will be held at the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena, Wednesday,
May 29 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
The registration is just $100 ($120 for
non-members), a small sum considering all you will receive, including:
• An invitation to the evening
cocktail reception.
• Continental breakfast before the
conference.
• Refreshments during a mid-morning
break.
• A buffet luncheon.
• Briefing materials.
• Networking opportunities.
