NCCBI unveils its legislative priorities

NCCBI's seven policy committees -- on which more than 400 members serve -- sent their chairmen before the microphones at last week's Legislative Conference to unveil the positions the committees believe NCCBI should pursue in the General Assembly this year. Collectively, the committees are recommending more than 60 new laws or changes in existing statutes. Because so much hard work went into formulating them, we urge all members to give these position statements a quick read. They are grouped below by topic under committee names. The documents are Word files that are easily downloaded and printed out for handy reference:
Economic Development Committee Education Committee
Environmental Concerns Committee Health Care Committee
Legal Issues and Workplace Policies Committee
Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee Transportation Committee

Extra bonus: We've grouped all the legislative positions together in a 46-page booklet, the NCCBI Committee Notebook, that's easily downloaded. The document is in PDF format requiring Acrobat Reader, which is free software.

For more perspective:
The conference's wrap-up speech by NCCBI President Phil Kirk helps put the committee positions into context.

Let's thank the members who sponsored the reception and conference

Meanwhile, at the General Assembly
Gov. Easley continued his search for budget-balancing revenue by appointing a tax-loophole-closing commission. With no major fireworks on Jones Street, legislators this week had to occupy their time with the ho-hum business of governing. We have these stories for you:
Former governors Scott, Holshouser to lead Tax Loophole Commission
Black, Basnight make appointments to key panels
Gubernatorial team-ticket bill easily passes the Senate
Should citizens, not politicians, redraw legislative districts?

State Government Watch
Hoping to avoid a long and bitter quarrel over which projects are more important than others, the State Board of Community Colleges decides to divvy up $600 million in higher education bonds by enrollment, not on which campuses needs the money the most.... North Carolina's unemployment rate climbs to 4.2%, the national average.
